What to Expect in Your First Surf Lesson in Tamarindo (and What to Bring)
Warm water and a sandy beach break make Tamarindo a popular place to take your first surf lesson in Costa Rica. If you have never stood on a board before, here is exactly what happens in a lesson with Surf Every Day Academy, so you can arrive relaxed and ready.
Step 1: A short theory session
Before we get in the water, we explain the basics visually: how waves form, how tides and currents work, where to position yourself and the safety rules of the ocean. Understanding the ocean makes you a safer and faster learner.
Step 2: Practice on land
We practice paddling, board position and the pop-up on the sand, so your body already knows the movement when the first wave arrives.
Step 3: In the water with your instructor
Your instructor stays with you in the water, helps you choose the right waves and gives you feedback in real time. We never have more than 3 students per instructor, so you get real attention.
What to bring
Swimwear
Reef-safe sunscreen
A towel
Water
What we provide
Surfboard, rash guard, leash, sunscreen, coffee, filtered water and lockers are included in every lesson.
Tips for a great first lesson
Tell your instructor about any injuries, fears or your swimming level before you start.
Arrive on time and avoid a heavy meal right before the lesson.
Do not worry about standing up on the first wave. Enjoy the process and listen to your instructor.
