Best Time to Learn to Surf in Tamarindo: Dry Season vs Green Season

One of the most common questions we get is when is the best time to learn to surf in Tamarindo. The short answer: you can learn all year round. The season changes the weather and the crowds, but what matters most for a good lesson is the tide, the swell and the time of day, and we choose those with you.

Dry season (roughly December to April)

Expect sunny days, very little rain and a busier town and beach. It is the most popular time to visit, so lessons can fill up faster, especially around holidays. Booking a few days ahead is a good idea.

Green season (roughly May to November)

The landscape is greener, the beach is quieter and it usually rains in the afternoon, so mornings are often the best time to surf. The ocean generally has more energy in these months, which is great for progressing, and we adapt the lesson to the conditions of the day.

Tides and time of day matter more than the season

The same beach can feel completely different at low, mid and high tide. That is why we teach you to read the ocean and why we set the lesson time according to the tide and the swell, not only the clock.

So when should you book?

• Traveling in the dry season or on holidays: book a few days ahead.

• Traveling in the green season: you can often book 1 or 2 days before.
